Telstra not allowed to provide internet says NTC
QUEZON CITY - As announced earlier today by the National Telecommunications Commission, Telstra may not provide any type of internet connection in the Philippines.

NTC spokesperson Romulo Nuevo told the media at the 5 PM press conference, "the whole commission and its associates believe that the expansion of Telstra as an internet service provider in the Philippines is detrimental to the country's best interests."

"We must preserve the continuity of what's going on right now with PLDT and Globe as the two leaders in fast and reliable internet connection. Having a third party from a foreign country will have serious ramifications with how the pricing, inclusive or not of taxes, is done," he added.

Mid-2015, it was announced that San Miguel Corp. was in talks with Australia's largest internet service provider Telstra in a possible expansion to the archipelago. The announcement was met with delight by frustrated customers of Philippine telcos which are the usual targets for complaints with slow internet speed and hidden bandwidth caps.

Nuevo also told the press, "the NTC -- let me say it in Filipino -- gusto lamang namin na tangkilikin ng mga Pilipino ang sariling atin." Claiming that the NTC only wants the Filipino people to support their own and not the Australian telco. In the full transcript, however, it is noted that Telstra is free to provide voice, mobile, TV cable and pay-per-view streaming services to the country.

Telstra has a long history in Australia, originating together with Australia Post as a government department, the Postmaster-General's Department. Telstra is now fully privatised and has been undergoing a change program to become more customer focused under its recent CEO, David Thodey. New CEO Andy Penn is expected to increase the focus on growth in international markets.

    4. The NTC should have the control over the telcos not the other way around. In other countries, the government agency responsible in their telecommunications has the authority to mandate the service providers to give the best products/services/offers for the benefit of the subscribers. Their government is concerned for the subscribers not the operators. They are also concerned of being competitive in terms of technological advancement as a pride of their country, in which is contrary to what is happening to our current situation in our nation. The operators in other countries are afraid of their government but not in this country. We hope our situation will change in the future for better.

Detrimental? Preserve the continuity to what PLDT and Globe are doing now? Are you stupid NTC? Get out of your offices and see how internet speed is outside urbanized area. You are depriving the Filipino people of better service and fair pricing. You dumb fucks you think PLDT and Globe are 100% Filipino owned? So Mr. Nuevo, the whole commission and it's associates, how much free load ang free phones do you get for being a lobbyist for Globe and PLDT?

    2. this is a lot of shit for the NTC to backed up PLDT and Globe...this is only a proof that they wanted the Philippines to be still the only country with a very very slow and poor internet services..i am a subcriber....that for almost a year i kept caliing the hotline of my internet PLDT /Smartbro because of losing my connection from time to time evryday while they keep sending me bills to pay for no service at all...to the point my australian husband nearly rang them up to just to give them a shit ....of what kind of services they are rending to us....everytime hour of the day i ran gup the hotline all they have to say is " im sorry for the inconvenience mam we are having internet traffic or rather they are having technical enhancement on their damned rabbish base center " to the point i said why not blew it up so that would be an excuse... then what when the monthly bills come up you still have to pay in full but no service provided to pay....that is only an example what kind of government we have...CORRUPTION is all over....a technician even offered me to boost up my speed in return of an amount....does they know how stupid they are for not trying to let a a new provider in....because PLDT will be nothing compared to the service of Telstra...

Globe - ownership from Singtel of Singapore

I don't see the argument of comparing Telstra ownership if exactly the same as the other two.

  95. "Fast and Reliable". That's what NTC thinks of our ISPs? If so, then please reevaluate our standings in terms of internet connections. You see, we (Philippines) is ranked 50 out of 55 in connection speed, with that, speed is very bad compared to other countries. Now how about reliability? I am subscribed to PLDT. 3mbps for 1299 or somewhere close to that. 3mbps is good enough for me, it really is. i play games at a decent latency, watch videos without bufferings beside the initial buffer and can watch livestreams at a decent quality. BUT, that is only if the connection is stable. Daily latency spikes even without doing anything, disconnections and just random stuff that ruins my experience. This is what we get from the Leading ISP here in the philippines which boasts "Fast and Reliable" services?

Now, testra, an Australian company that plans on setting up a service center here to improve our browsing experience. Testra which is ranked 30 out of 55 is still somewhat at a lower part of the chart which has an average speed of 6-7mbps is still a massive improvement. Granted we still don't know how their services perform here in the philippines. But declining their offer because NTC wants "the Filipino people to support their own and not the Australian telco". Really?

  174. Engineering student, 3rd year. I admit, I use the internet for leisure, but also for educational purposes as well, Data cap is seriously debilitating

I am no longer able to play games which I like. Starcraft 2, World of Tanks to name a couple...a lot of data required to patches

Watching tutorial videos, doing online research...they go out the window as well. This is quite bad, as in my point of view...Think of it this way...yourself as...a painter...painting beautiful works of art...always being forced to paint within the small boundaries of a frame that you are given...never allowed to reach your full potential. 800mb data cap will let me watch a lot of vidoes...however according only to THEIR TERMS....5 minutes...and probably 240p or 360p resolution. This is a GREAT PAIN especially if you are watching a tutorial/lecture videos...especially on my part. Where those low resolutions are very bad when you need to pause the video and try to READ written texts at such low resolutions...all of them are also a whole lot LONGER than 5 minutes...1 hour...2 hour lectures. differential equations, advanced algebra, thermodynamics, engineering physics to name a few subjects. There has to be a better way.

    In today's internet connected world

Picking up a book and doing it the "old fashioned way" is just not enough,

especially with books that leave out the EXPLANATION of the problem solving processes

Just the final solution and the answer...you are NOT gonna learn ANYTHING like this...no explanation...sooner or later you are gonna come across something you can't understand on your own at face value

Also...this capping and slow internet is also a cap on intellectual growth...how many Filipino Live-streamers does this country have? Problem is...this companies have blinded us....what most people know of the internet now is just Facebook and Google to name a couple...This is NOT TRUE...the internet is SO MUCH MORE

The internet is the sum of ALL Human Knowledge, Both good and bad.
Leisure, games, education, military...you name it! it's there!

The internet in my opinion is the Human version of Starcraft's "Khala" which joins all minds together...with the internet...for the first time in human history, we found an unparalleled level of unity, transcending so many boundaries that have once hindered our interactions with our fellow man thousands of miles away...with the internet, being able to share knowledge became so much more easy...that knowledge being put to use to help advance so many, whole countries like several African nations which were once war torn from years of conflict were in a short time able to build factories and suddenly churn out smart phones! BUT not in the sense joining certain thoughts and and emotions...that is a line I hope we may never cross...for example....I do not want to listen to the thoughts of someone else listening to music which I HATE...I pray...this data cap to be removed...for the internet here to improve...or at the very least, make several websites truly "unlimited" access, like Youtube, Khan Academy, Sparknotes, and a whole range of other sites which may be used to help expand our knowledge. Truth be told education here in the Philippines...in any college/university cannot compare to other countries...the internet helps augment the shortcomings and let us remain COMPETITIVE to other nations in my opinion
